Mac training on the pitch

Midfielder Development

Mac’s midfielder goals

My goal is not to present this as an academy, but to document how I am learning the midfield position over time. I want to become a midfielder who is calm on the ball, disciplined without it and useful to the team in every phase of the game.

  • be comfortable receiving under pressure
  • improve scanning, positioning and decision-making
  • develop the passing range to control rhythm and connect play
  • learn when to defend, when to support and when to attack
  • build the consistency and mindset needed for long-term progress

Core development areas

Technical

First touch, passing quality, receiving on the half-turn, ball protection and clean execution under pressure.

Tactical

Scanning, positioning, support angles, tempo control, transitions and making better decisions at the right time.

Physical and mental

Work rate, balance, recovery, concentration, discipline, confidence and the patience to keep building over time.

Midfielder roles: No. 6, No. 8 and No. 10

No. 6

I see the No. 6 as the player who gives the team balance. This role teaches me to protect space, stay available in build-up, play simple when needed and stay switched on defensively.

No. 8

The No. 8 role feels like the link between everything. It pushes me to cover ground, support both boxes, combine with teammates and keep making good decisions while the game is moving quickly.

No. 10

The No. 10 role reminds me to be brave and creative. It is about finding pockets, turning quickly, playing forward and helping create chances in the final third.

Current training focus

Right now, my focus is on building habits that will help me in every midfield role rather than chasing too many things at once. I want the basics to become more natural so I can play with more clarity and confidence.

  • scanning earlier before receiving
  • opening my body shape to play forward more often
  • improving first touch and passing consistency
  • staying composed when pressed
  • reviewing training and matches honestly to spot patterns

Development journal

This section is where I record what I am learning, what is improving and what still needs more work. The aim is to show honest progress over time through real notes, reflections and lessons from training and matches.
